PROJECT 01
BUILDING AWARENESS
Visual Storytelling
Design is storytelling. We are stories. Everything humans do and experience evolves around some kind of story. It’s the way we contextualize information and experience to make it meaningful. The story is the way that we remember who we are, where we have come from, and where we can go.
Engage in a one-on-one interview with one of your classmates. Synthesize your interview findings into two distinct metaphors. Explore one metaphor purely visually and one purely typographically. Design an Orion-style folding booklet, integrating and iterating both metaphors, to share the unique story of your interview partner. Interpret and transform your content into a compelling design using abstract pattern development and storytelling across your 8-panel booklet. The visual story unfolds on the front panels only. The back panels need to be considered but are not carrying essential parts of the story.
Emphasis will be placed upon original concept development and the exploration of diverse processes, techniques, and methods. (photography, screen printing, xerography…) you will be expected to experiment and explore, thereby expanding on your visualizing skills.

• to practice listening skills, empathy, note-taking, and synthesizing information
• to create new relationships between given information
• to integrate design principles, elements, and attributes into a coherent visual story
• to practice rhythmic interaction and progression between type and image
• to deepen repertoire of experimentation with outer and inner form

Discovering the relationship between design and
human experience

Intention Calling
How can I create connections in civilization to explore the existence
or living cosmic creatures?
or living cosmic creatures?
Visual Storytelling
Creative work reaches deep into our intuitive and unconscious minds, hearts, and feelings. The Sea Change Design workshop helped you define your calling intention and its embedded meaning.
Examine how this abstract question can be interpreted and represented in visual form, offering clarity and understanding to yourself and the viewer. Push beyond literal translation and use metaphors and storytelling for your design.
They are a kind of sense, like hearing and seeing. Metaphors not only enliven expression and make it appealing, but the metaphorical connection is how the human brain understands anything abstract. We understand almost everything that is not concrete (even “concrete” is a metaphor) in terms of something else.
The expansiveness of our metaphors determines the expansiveness of our reality and what we are able—and unable—to see. Expand the scope and richness of the metaphors you reason with to expand your thinking. As humans, we have an unlimited ability to create new combinations of imagery.
Emphasis will be placed on original concept development and exploring diverse processes, techniques, and methods. you will be expected to experiment and explore, thereby expanding on your visualizing skills: eg drawing, photography, xerography, abstraction, typography, collage, textures, sculpture, and different types of materials: paper, fabric, vellum, cardboard, metal, wood, foil…
Why are we doing this?
• to expand the scope and richness of the metaphors you reason with
• to translate abstract data into concise visuals
• to recognize, develop, and apply pattern language
• to sense and surface deeper levels of our lived human experience

Leveraging your calling into
organizational intentions

Intention Calling
How can Seaform design transformative experiences within humanity and nature
in order to cultivate sustainable environmental action?
in order to cultivate sustainable environmental action?
Visual Storytelling
After designing your calling intention you get to apply your new knowledge at the next larger scale. Leverage your intentions into an organizational intention that manifests meaningful work in the world. As a group, design the intention and the basic brand of a fictitious non-profit organization that engages in the field of water. To help scope the infinite scale around water, orient your organization towards one of the 3 topics:
1. Engineering:
Your organization is offering a “Project Drawdown” Solution
Your organization is offering a “Biomimicry” strategy
2. Awareness:
Your organization is generating “Experiences” around water
Your organization is offering “Education” about water
3. Social Justice:
Your organization is offering “Equality” around water
Your organization is offering a “Project Drawdown” Solution
Your organization is offering a “Biomimicry” strategy
2. Awareness:
Your organization is generating “Experiences” around water
Your organization is offering “Education” about water
3. Social Justice:
Your organization is offering “Equality” around water
Consider the following relationships in your topic search:
. water literacy (education)
. water & social justice (gender equality, human rights, accessibility, ownership, rights of nature)
. water & culture (appreciation/art/imagination)
. water & ecology (biodiversity/climate change / indigenous & emerging technologies)

Why are we doing this?
• to collaborate and co-create meaningful work in groups
• to practice non-linear thinking
• to practice systems thinking to see, synthesize, and assemble parts into recognizable patterns
• to experience design as a way to build coherence across an organization
• to practice design as the means to enhance relationships between people and the planet
